Benzotriazole compounds are used, among other things, as UV absorbers in polymers. In addition to being used to increase weathering stability, these products are used as filling protection for packaging. At Lifocolor, these are available as LIFOSTAB additive or combination masterbatches. Benzotriazole compounds such as 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol have long been suspected of being particularly persistent in environmental degradation and bioaccumulative. A listing by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) has been in place since 2016 for further evaluation, which is expected to be completed this year.
In order to prevent possible future regulatory measures, Lifocolor has not used any affected benzotriazole compounds for new developments for some time and has already included alternative light and filler protection masterbatches for polyolefins and polyesters in its LIFOSTAB standard portfolio. We will expand the programme in the coming months with developments for other standard plastics.
Please contact us for further information or visit the ECHA website.
