Benzotrialzole-free alternatives for masterbatches with UV absorber

Lifocolor expands portfolio for light and filling protection

Parasols against a blue sky

From 03 August 2023, specific benzotriazole compounds should be officially listed as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

Benzotriazole compounds are used as UV absorbers in polymers. In addition to being used to increase weathering stability, these products are used as filling protection for packaging. At Lifocolor, these are available as LIFOSTAB additive or combination masterbatches. Benzotriazole compounds such as 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol have long been suspected of being particularly persistent in environmental degradation and bioaccumulative. A listing by ECHA as SVHC has taken place since 2016 for further evaluation and will be completed this year.

Lifocolor has not used any affected benzotriazole compounds for new developments for some time and has already included alternative light and filler protection masterbatches for polyolefins and polyesters in its LIFOSTAB standard portfolio. We will expand the programme in the coming months with developments for other standard plastics.

Please contact us for further information or visit the ECHA website.
